The Columbia Justice Lab welcomes Vincent Schiraldi, Justice Lab co-founder and former commissioner of the New York City Department of Probation, who will discuss his new book Mass Supervision: Probation, Parole, and the Illusion of Safety and Freedom. He will be joined in conversation by Bruce Western, the Bryce Professor of Sociology and Social Justice and Director of the Justice Lab at Columbia University, Michael Jacobson, Director of CUNY Institute for State and Local Governance, Donna Hylton, activist and founder of A Little Bit of Light and Emily Napier Signgletary, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Unchained.
In Mass Supervision, Schiraldi combines firsthand experience with deep research on the inadequately explored practices of probation and parole to illustrate how they have become “recidivism traps,” increase incarceration, have little impact on crime rates, and needlessly disrupt countless lives. Ultimately, he argues that they should be dramatically downsized or even abolished completely.
